Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is breaking down transportation barriers
with a service called rideQ and the
technical savvy of Loka.

The goal

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) wanted to offer a local rideshare option to its members who travel to medical appointments. The goal was to incorporate a popular rideshare service into a BCBSA-managed app that would be easy to understand and use, even for those unfamiliar with rideshare technology.

The challenge

More than three million people report every year that they don’t get medical care because they don’t have access to transportation to-and-from the doctor’s office. To break down transportation barriers, the rideQ app needed to offer BCBSA’s elder user base simple, one-click access. The Institute had been working with another firm for a year to scant result when it called on Loka, who pulled a team together within a week and helped rideQ set up and ship three different projects on AWS infrastructure within a year.

The solution

Loka partnered with Lyft and BCBSA in three different markets to incorporate Lyft’s transportation infrastructure into BCBSA’s healthcare-portal app. Loka’s design team developed a highly streamlined interface that skinned onto the BCBSA app to allow easy scheduling of Lyft rides for folks who may have been unfamiliar with the technology.

What we delivered

In 12 weeks, Loka redesigned the app, coded the design into software and delivered a working version of rideQ on deadline.

The results

BCBSA offered rideQ in three different California markets for a 12-month pilot period. The Sacramento program was especially successful, granting free transportation to more than 1,000 BCBCA members in and around the city. Eligible destinations included primary care appointments and lab, radiology and pharmacy visits.
